A blocked toilet is something no one wants to deal with—but it’s a common household issue. The good news is that many blockages can be cleared quickly with the right approach. Here’s a practical, step-by-step guide to help you unblock a toilet safely and effectively.
1. Don’t Keep Flushing
If the toilet doesn’t drain properly after one flush, don’t flush again. This can cause the bowl to overflow. Wait a few minutes to see if the water level drops on its own.
2. Use a Plunger
A toilet plunger (with a flange) is your best tool for the job.
Make sure there’s enough water in the bowl to cover the plunger.
Position it over the hole and push down gently, then pump forcefully several times.
On the final pump, pull up quickly to try and break the blockage.
Flush once to check if the water drains properly.
3. Add Hot Water and Washing-Up Liquid
If plunging doesn’t work, try this method:
Pour about half a bucket of hot (not boiling) water into the bowl.
Add a good squeeze of washing-up liquid.
Let it sit for 10–15 minutes to soften the blockage, then try plunging again.
4. Use a Toilet Auger (If Available)
For more stubborn clogs, a toilet auger or drain snake can reach deeper into the pipe. Carefully feed it into the drain, turning the handle to break up or pull out the obstruction.
5. Call in the Professionals
If none of the above works—or if the toilet backs up repeatedly—it’s time to call a professional drainage company. The blockage could be further down the system or part of a bigger drainage issue.
